I keep coming back to one ugly number: according to three sources familiar with the data who spoke to Reuters, the United States has spent through almost its entire stock of long-range ATACMS and PrSM missiles in five months of war with Iran. At the same time, the Pentagon has burned nearly half of its worldwide Tomahawk cruise missile inventory.
This is not a tidy procurement problem. It is the kind of gap that reveals the real ceiling on American power. ATACMS reaches about 300 km, PrSM goes out to roughly 500 km, and Tomahawk gives the Navy and the broader US strike network a long arm from ships and submarines. If those weapons can be chewed through at this pace, the question is no longer whether the US has the best kit. The question is whether the factories behind the kit can keep the country in the fight.
What the missiles reveal
The burn rate is the story
People have not quite absorbed what “virtually all” means in this context. It means the US has used up nearly everything it had on hand in the classes that matter for deep strikes. ATACMS has been one of the Army’s sharpest tools for years, PrSM is supposed to be its replacement, and Tomahawk remains one of the cleanest ways to hit a target far from the launcher. These are not niche rounds. They are the expensive punctuation marks of modern war.
The Reuters reporting shows the depletion is severe. Three separate sources familiar with the data told the outlet this is not a random wartime spike in artillery shell use. It is the consumption of high-end missiles, the sort that planners assume will be scarce and politically sensitive even before the first launch.
Moisés R. Hernández, writing at MRH Análisis, said the war was expected to be short. Five months later, that assumption looks optimistic to the point of carelessness. If a campaign against Iran can drain this much of the US precision stockpile, then the real limit on American force is not the launch platform. It is the magazine.
The inventory math is cruel
The replacement rate turns the story from uncomfortable to embarrassing. Reuters said the US Army gets only about 15 new Tomahawk missiles each month. Fifteen. That number belongs in peacetime planning, not in a world where inventories can collapse in a single campaign.
Analysts have also estimated that rebuilding stocks for systems such as THAAD, the missile defence shield used to intercept ballistic threats in the terminal phase, could take three years or more. That timeline is revealing. THAAD is not a side note. It sits in the same family of complex, high-value systems that depend on specialised components, small supplier bases and slow production lines. If restoring one class of advanced interceptor can take years, then the idea that the US can empty its precision arsenal in months and refill it on command is pure fantasy.
The strategic imbalance is plain enough. Washington can spend in weeks what its industrial base needs years to recover. That is a terrible bargain in any war of endurance. It becomes worse when adversaries are watching, counting, and asking whether the US can keep enough missiles in reserve for the next crisis.
Why the factories lag
Peacetime production is a weak defence
The deeper problem is not that America forgot how to build weapons. Its defence industry was organised for something closer to managed scarcity than wartime surge. Complex missiles are not loaves of bread. They need guidance systems, rocket motors, seeker heads, explosive materials and qualified labour, all assembled through supply chains that are efficient when the shelves are full and painfully slow when demand jumps.
Tomahawk output at roughly 15 a month is awkward. The number is not tiny because the Pentagon is indifferent. It is tiny because that is what a mature, highly specialised production line looks like when it has not been built for mass mobilisation. The same logic applies to ATACMS and PrSM. Even when one missile family is being replaced by another, the industrial rhythm does not suddenly accelerate just because strategy has changed.
This is also where a lot of public talk about military power gets lazy. The usual image is a sleek missile, a targeting screen, a precision strike and a clean result. The real limiter sits far behind the firing point, in plant capacity, subcontractors, inventory management and labour that cannot be conjured up after the fact. Modern war still rewards technology, but technology without throughput is just expensive theatre.
Quantity is a form of power
Old empires obsessed over shipyards, steel and railways because they understood that force is an industrial problem, not just a design problem. The US still has unmatched reach, but reach depends on munitions, and munitions depend on manufacturing depth. If the system cannot replenish losses fast enough, the country ends up rationing its own military confidence.
That is the real lesson buried in these missile figures. The US is not weak, but its margin for error is narrower than its mythology suggests. A state can look overwhelming on paper and still discover that it has a finite number of expensive shots.
What this means for the next crisis
China and Russia do the arithmetic too
If these figures are accurate, then the strategic consequences go well beyond Iran. The US does not plan for one war at a time. It has to think about the possibility of simultaneous pressure, including a confrontation involving China or Russia. A depleted precision stockpile makes that problem harder immediately. It reduces the number of options available to Washington and makes every decision to fire a missile carry a second, quieter cost: one fewer missile for the next emergency.
That changes deterrence. Adversaries do not need perfect intelligence to understand the shape of a shortage. They only need to suspect that US stocks are thin and replenishment is slow. That suspicion can invite risk-taking, especially in a year when several theatres can flare at once and every theatre asks for the same finite arsenal.
The uncomfortable truth in Hernández’s point about missiles as a measure of industrial limits is that the conflict has become a stress test for the American system, not just for its targeting software or its strike doctrine. If five months in Iran can leave the arsenal this stripped, then the country has a broader question to answer about what kind of military it is actually building. A force designed to launch is not the same thing as a force designed to last.
The sharp question now is whether Washington wants a military that can win a brief, clean contest, or one that can keep firing after the first month of the next war.
